Approximately what is the overall cost of cancer treatments in India?

My aunt was diagnosed with stage 4 Lung and bone cancer which eventually spread to Adrenal Glands,Thorax and Brain .

These are the costs we had incurred .

  •    PET Scan to confirm the Cancer and get an overview of the size of the Tumor - Rs 30000.
  •     Biopsy for the Lung - Rs.2000.
  •     Chemo 1 packet / round costed Rs.72000 (so 6 rounds of chemo costed us Rs 72000 x 6).
  •     Radiation for the Brain Rs 40000.
  •     Radiation for the whole body Rs 50000.
  •     Stay in hospital was around 2000 per day so on and off she had to be admitted for almost an     year and half (180 days X 2000).
  •     During the Chemo rounds the platelet and blood cell counts drop rapidly so during the course of an year we had to transfuse 24 units of plasma and blood, so this costed - Rs.4000 to 5000 X 24 units.

A Lot of other miscellaneous costs for medicines and protein supplements.
The Entire Treatment was carried out in one of the best hospitals in Hyderabad .

Total cost of treatment exceeded 10,10,000/-

So, The Sum it up the cost of Cancer Treatment depends the Type of Hospital, The cancer type , stage ,Age of the Patient ,The size of tumor and so many other things.

नहीं है तो आज तैयारी करो क्योंकि WHO की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार 2025 तक भारत की 87% जनता कैंसर की गिरफ्त में होगी।

Cancer will claim 9.6 million lives in the world this year and India’s share in it will be a worrying 8.17 %, warns data recently released by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer. The WHO data says India will have 1.16 million new cancer cases this year and more than 50 per cent of these will be diagnosed in women.

Also, IARC says that while cancer in lip, oral cavity (16.1 per cent) and lung (8.5 per cent) are the most common in Indian men, in women they are most found in breasts (27.7 per cent) and cervix uteri (16.5 per cent).

भारतीय महिलाओं में कैंसर होने की संभावना अधिक पाई गई है

Cancer Statistics in India

  •     Estimated number of people living with the disease: around 2.25 million
  •     Every year, new cancer patients registered: Over 11,57,294 lakh
  •     Cancer-related deaths: 7,84,821

Risk of developing cancer before the age of 75 years

Total deaths due to cancer in 2018 in INDIA
    Total: 7,84,821
     Men: 4,13,519
     Women: 3,71,302

Cancers of oral cavity and lungs  account for over 25% of cancer deaths in males and cancer of  breast and oral cavity account for 25% cancers in females.

The top five cancers in men and women account for 47.2% of all cancers; these cancers can be prevented, screened for and/or detected early and treated at an early stage.

This could significantly reduce the death rate from these cancers.

Cancer rate doubles in India

Oral Cancer is among the top three cancers in India, number one among all cancers in men and number three among female cancers.
"Breast cancer is currently the most common cancer among Indian women, both in terms of incidence as well as mortality, with proportional prevalence in younger age-groups being higher than the global average."

1. There are more than 100 types of cancers; almost any part of the body can be affected.

2. The cancers in India between men and women are breast, cervical, oral cavity, lung, and colorectal.

3. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in India.

4. Use of tobacco products (eg smoking cigarettes) is the single most preventable cause of death worldwide.

5. More women in India die from cervical cancer than in any other country.

6. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in India.

7. The average age for breast cancer in India is almost 10 years lower than that in the western world.

One woman dies of cervical cancer every 8 minutes in India

According to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2015 Study, the most common types of cancer are prostate, lung, and colorectal cancer in males and breast, colorectal, and lung cancer in females. The following are some of the reasons which we can control if there is a will.

Cholesterol. Cholesterol is absolutely necessary for the human body. Branding it a dangerous stuff and naming some good and some bad was an ill thought affair. Everybody wanted to lower cholesterol. Angioplasty requires a low cholesterol that the stent, a foreign stuff may not be attacked, and the low requirement was made the normal. By lowering cholesterol level, body’s ability to fight cancer is also lowered.

Statins. Statins lower cholesterol by attacking the liver. The liver gets hardened and immunity becomes compromised.

Saturated oils. Scientists bribed by sugar industry blamed saturated oils for many ills for 42 years. The stigma is not removed even now, especially in popular writings. This led to use of ‘heart healthy oils’ which are easily oxidised and thus carcinogenic, and to too much ofgrilled food which is often burned and carcinogenic. Another tragedy is cooking in plastic coated pans called ‘non stick’. All nonstick coatings release carcinogens into the food. Although cooking in steam or water is best, cooking in saturated oils has to be restored to avoid far greater evils.

Sugar and substitutes. Inflammatory, burdening immune response.

Pesticides. Pesticides in air, water, soil and food. Needs no laboration. GMO make plants pesticide resistant, not humans.

Preservative. Makes nutrition unavailable to the body besides harming organs.

Air pollution. Makes oxygen deficiency . Cancer thrives when oxygen is less.

Heavy exposure to asbestos, pollution from industrial wastes, tobacco consumption and or smoking. Pesticides, chlorine, fluoride, msg, are carcinogenic.

Chronic Stress & Strain.
Anything that weakens or stresses your immune system can lead to cancer, for example: Lack of exercise & ever increasing obese bodies. Fatty liver,Eating junk food, red meat, diet soda.

Regular consumption of ‘colas’ with massive doses of insecticides, freely available in India. Regular & excessive alcohol consumption. If staple diet/food includes pizzas, burgers, deep freezed and deep fried chicken, mutton, pork cured meat, etc.

Skin Cancer Exposure to Sun’s rays @ odd hours [90 minutes after sunrise, beyond 60 minutes before sunset and anytime during strong winds] and excessive exposure to radiation emanating from cell phones, transmission towers, etc., Tattooing is carcinogenic.

24/7-- Wearing of bra by the modern woman. When a woman wears a tight bra, she subjects her breasts to pressure, closing off the lymphatic pathway from the breast to the nodes. This causes fluid built-up swelling, tenderness and cyst formation.

Late marriages and late pregnancies, avoiding breast feeding the infant—breast cancer.

Nutritional deficiencies – the most important ones are low levels of vitamin D and C and the minerals selenium and iodine.

HUMANS are KILLING themselves

When purchasing any mediclaim or health insurance plan always look for following things:

1) Cashless hospital network in your locality (more the hospital the better it is).

2) Quality of hospitals covered under cashless network.

3) Exclusions and waiting period of your health insurance plan.

4) Are there any cappings in your policy.

5) Who will support you in case you need to file any claim in emergency.

6) Do visit your local hospitals listed in your policy to ensure cashless facility is given.

7) Always take your policy from a wealth consultant rather than online, as they are more sensitive towards you and will be helpfull in case of emergencies as compared to any of the customer care desk executive.

Even if your parents are adequately covered by your employer, the cover provided would cease to exist post-retirement or you being fired or due to change in expenditure policy by employer. Considering the current rate of medical inflation in India, adequate health insurance has become a must-have for each and every individual, and if the individual happens to be your parent, the need to buy a senior citizen health insurance plan becomes all the more important.

REMEBER: your employer is not bound to cover your parents health expenses. know more
